Special Days

There are several special days throughout the church year that we celebrate.  See below for more details.

Advent

Advent begins the church year. It is a season of reflection and preparation, reflection on the past years and preparation for the birth of our Savior at Bethlehem. We also use these days to think about our Lord’s return in glory. Wednesday services are at 6:30 p.m. The Liturgical color is blue or purple. Our paraments for Advent are blue.

Christmas Eve - Day

We celebrate the reason for the birth of our Savior. Jesus came to earth, lived, died, rose from death to life, and returned to heaven, all so that we might receive the promise of eternal life with Him.

We celebrate Christmas with a children’s service at 6:30 on Christmas Eve, and a congregation service Christmas Day at 9:00 a.m.

The liturgical color for the 12 day Season of Christmas (December 24-January 5) is white.

Epiphany

Epiphany is often referred to as “The Gentile’s Christmas”. We remember the wise men who were Gentiles from an eastern country. They came to worship the infant Jesus.

Also in the season of Epiphany we observe the Baptism of Jesus. The season can end in one of two ways. We use the more current practice of ending with Transfiguration Sunday. The Epiphany color is white.

LENT – THE SEASON

Lent consists of 40 days leading up to Holy Week. It is a season of reflection, repentance, and prayer. We remember our sins and sinfulness which is the reason Jesus came, suffered, and died for us. Usually, the pastor will select a special theme which we will follow throughout Lent

Our Lenten services are on Wednesday’s at 6:30 p.m.

The seasonal color is purple.

HOLY WEEK

Beginning with Palm Sunday (also known as “Passion Sunday”) we focus on the week of our Savior’s suffering and death.

Maundy Thursday is a day of great importance.  On this day Jesus instituted Holy Communion and encouraged all believers to receive this often for forgiveness, strengthening of faith, and in preparation for life eternal.

Our Maundy Thursday service is at 6:30 p.m.

Good Friday focuses on the cross and the death of our Savior.

Our worship is at 9:00 a.m.

The liturgical color is black.

EASTER SUNDAY

Easter is the most important day in the church year. The focus is on the resurrection of our Savior and His presenting Himself alive before His followers.

We begin our day with worship at 7:00 a.m.
After worship we gather for Breakfast in the parish hall. This is followed by a brief Sunday school lesson and an Easter Egg hunt.

The color of the Easter season is white.

PENTECOST

Pentecost arrives 10 days after the Ascension of Jesus into heaven. It is the day on which He sent the Holy Spirit on the disciples and they began to preach and teach the truth of Jesus to all people.

The liturgical color is red.

TRINITY SUNDAY

Trinity Sunday turns our focus to the work of each person of the Trinity. God the Father created and sustains the world. He sent His Son to earth to be our Savior and Redeemer. Jesus is the Son of God the Father, who suffered, died, and rose again for our salvation. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, God with the Father and the Son. His work is to bring us to faith, keep us in the true faith, and strengthen us toward the day of life eternal.

The liturgical color for the day is white.

FESTIVAL AND NON-FESTIVAL SEASON

Advent through Trinity Sunday are called the Festival half of the Church year. Sundays after Pentecost are the non-festival half.

During the non-festival season, our focus is on the life of the Church and our lives as children of God and heirs of life eternal.

The color for the Sundays after Trinity and Pentecost is green.

REFORMATION DAY – October 31

In 1517, Martin Luther a German monk, posted his 95 Theses, or things that the Catholic Church was doing wrong. He wasn’t looking to start the reformation, but that is exactly what happened. On this day we celebrate the work that he did through the power of the Holy Spirit in bringing the church back to the true teaching of the Bible. Sola Scriptura (By Scripture alone) Sola Fida (By Faith alone) Sola Gratia (By Grace alone). This falls on the last Sunday of October and we use the red color to show how the Holy Spirit lead Luther to rediscover the truth of Jesus Christ in the Holy Bible.

The liturgical color is red.

ALL SAINT’S DAY

The final celebration in the church year is All Saint’s Day, which always falls on November 1. Usually, we celebrate it on the Sunday after Nov. 1, if Nov. 1 is not a Sunday. On this day, we remember those members who have gone to heaven during the past year.

The liturgical color is white.

Fundraisers

We have several fundraisers each year, and all are welcome to join!  See more information about each below.

BBQ Chicken

The first fundraiser that we usually have is our BBQ Chicken. We sell plates to go and they have BBQ chicken (of course) along with some sides and a dessert. The proceeds go toward our Sunday School and Tuition Assistance programs. Both of these programs help spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to our youngest generations so they may know their Savior as well.

MOTHER'S DAY PICNIC

This is our biggest fundraiser all year and so there is a lot going on. To start we have church in the Pavilion outside at 10 A.M. Then after that is over we start selling BBQ, (Brisket, Chicken halves, Sausage and Pork Steaks) along with Wendish Noodles, Potato Salad and BBQ Sauce. There are also homemade desserts for sale. But wait there’s more, during this time a silent auction is taking place. After all the lunch food has been sold (and eaten) we have a Polka band come and play for everyone’s enjoyment. But still the fun is not over, in the afternoon we hold a live auction, and both the Beer and the Hamburger Stands are open. This multifaceted fundraiser goes to support all the different aspects of the church, from the general operating fund, to Sunday School and Tuition Assistance programs and even the LWML.

Turkey Supper

On the first Friday of November, we sell turkey suppers with all the fixings. It’s a great chance to get into the Thanksgiving spirit and to eat your fill of turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, green beans and more. Make sure you get here early because we always sell out and you don’t want to miss out on this great meal.
